Coffee plants arrived in Panama at the end of the 19th century with the first European settlers. Over time, especially the demand for the high quality specialty coffees has grown steadily. There are different microclimates in the country, where unique coffees with unique aromas and flavors are grown thanks to talented coffee farmers. Panama is also known for its Geisha coffees, which were brought from Costa Rica to Panama around 1963 by the "Godfather of Geisha" Don Pachi.
Originally an African variety, it is characterized by a light body, lemony and gentle acidity, and a strong floral cup profile. The varieties gained particular popularity when Hacienda La Esmeralda began selling outstanding lots at auction, fetching incredible record prices.
Panama has a relatively high standard of labor laws. Therefore, workers are paid better, and the price for the end consumer is correspondingly higher.
